Though often cited as an author of science fiction, Richard A. Lupoff (1935-2020) contribute to numerous fields and genres, notably mystery-fiction.

In his highly checkered career, Lupoff was a short-order cook, dishwasher, movie usher, military policeman, college professor, and petty bureaucrat. All of these experiences fed into the rich — if somewhat chaotic — data bank that nourished his literary career. In that career he was a sports writer, radio news writer and broadcaster, novelist, short story writer, critic, screen-writer, editor, anthologist, and on very rare occasions, poet. He has the rare distinction of having had stories selected for best-of-the-year anthologies in three fields: science fiction, mystery, and horror.

Lupoff authored Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master of Adventure and (with co-author Don Thompson) All In Color For a Dime, the first major work of comic book criticism.

After completing his degree and military service, Lupoff worked as a technical writer at Sperry Univac, then at IBM for seven years directing informational films. Richard and Pat Lupoff were married from 1958 until her death in 2018, and had three children. They lived in Westchester County and then in Manhattan, and later in Northern California.
